Chapter 8
In the morning Katherine forced herself to go to breakfast with a smile on her face. The countess was already sitting and happily waiting for her. She started chattering about their plans for the day. Maybe they could take a tour of the village, they could ride in a closed carriage to avoid being seen. They both wanted to make each other happy. However, their plans were foiled by the sound of the gate opening and horsesâ hooves. They looked at each other, wondering who their visitor could be. They got their answer when the door opened. Lily and Simon were standing on the doorstep. Katherine stared at them disbelievingly. Stunned, the countess could not gather her bearings.
âSimon, where are⦠we thought⦠Iâ¦â
âYes, we understand. Dear, thereâs no need to explain. We were all so excited by Simonâs arrival and his story about what happened to him. Oh, my dear Valery, only you can understand me. Youâre a mother as well,â Lily said as she approached Valery, she grabbed her hands and started weeping. Lily was acting like she was greeting her best friend. Confused by her behavior, the countess returned the hug. Lily continued talking incessantly about her concern over Simon. She did not even say hello to Katherine. The awkwardness was interrupted by Katherine who addressed Simon.
âMy brother, youâre alive and thatâs whatâs important. Come closer so that I can give you a hug.â
Simon approached her and enveloped her in his arms. Then he whispered quietly, âPlease forgive me, it is entirely my fault.â
âNo, no, what are you whispering about? Katherine, the journey was long. It was so hard for me, the past few months. My son returned, but you almost led me to my death with your caprices. I didnât speak a word of this to your father. How could I? He rarely gets out of the bed, and Iâm supposed to tell him of your shameless behavior? Well, the man would die of shame,â Lily babbled, taking a seat.
Simon looked at her, reared up and said in a loud voice, âMother, you donât know what Katherine went through, so pleaseâ¦â
Lily interrupted him and replied while waving her hand, âI donât know?! You are the one who doesnât know. Valery has suffered greatly. She accepted your sister and sacrificed for her. How can you not see that? How could she do this to us? And with that man? Ah, mon ami, my dear Valery, I have decided to take care of it. No, no, this shame and burden will not fall on us, trust me.â
The countess took a seat and leaned her head on her palm. She knew that Lily was manipulating something, but could not tell exactly what she was up to. Simon rolled his eyes, while Katherine tried to avoid a fight by keeping quiet. Whatever she said to her mother it would not deter her from talking and complaining. However, they all wanted to hear how Lily planned to deal with the situation at hand.
